Procedure

The area of interest was a regularly spaced grid of streets and intersections with a significant elevation change. Approximately 20 city blocks were measured using a traditional roll-a-tape. Grades for each street were measured. The scene was modeled using a popular 3-D cad package. Buildings were created and textured. A photograph of San Francisco Bay was placed as a backdrop. Exemplar vehicles, a 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback and a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T, were found. Like all vehicles in the EDC Vehicle Database, they were measured, weighed and digitized by EDC. Physical properties were obtained or measured directly. The drive train specifications for the Mustang 390-4V automatic and Charger 440 Magnum automatic were obtained from the manufacturer. As luck would have it, the entire chase scene was filmed. Thus it was possible to document the airborne trajectories of the vehicles, revealing that they were airborne for approximately 1 ½ to 2 ½ car lengths (about 22 to 37 feet).
